Volunteer Day  Saturday 23 July 2011

Thanks to all who braved the heat to come out and help during June’s Volunteer Day. We cleared a portion of the field of thistles, transplanted peppers, and planted pumpkins and winter squash.

This month, the Volunteer Day will be held on Saturday, 23 July. To keep us all from melting in the heat and to match everyone’s schedules as best we can we are again trying new work times. There will be time for work from 8 until 11 in the morning, and 4 until 7 in the afternoon. If you arrive after the designated times for starting, please go to the barn and look for a sign telling you where to find us.

The picnic will follow the first work period, and so begin around 11 in the morning. If you plan to come for the picnic consider bringing balls, frisbees, footballs, or any other toys and games. We will offer lemonade and small snacks. You are welcome to come to the picnic even if you will not be joining us for any work that day.

As always, please bring plenty of water (at least 1-2 quarts for each working shift); the farm does not have its own source of drinking water.

If you have any questions, please call (540-0912). (Now that the season has fully begun, we’re rarely on the Internet.) I hope you will join us.

Volunteer Day   Saturday 25 June 2011

Dear friends of the Kranz Hill Farm,

Our Volunteer Day in May was productive and the weather was beautiful. We transplanted several hundred feet of tomatoes and weeded the tall grass that had come up around the potatoes. Thank you to all who came out to help.

This month, the Volunteer Day will be held on Saturday, 25 June. Because of the summer heat we are changing the work times for the day. There will be times for work from 7 until 10 in the morning, and 4 until 7 in the afternoon, with a picnic in between from 10 until 12. This way we can enjoy the most pleasant times of the day and everyone can scurry inside (or at least into the shade) when the sun is high in the sky. Even so it is important to be prepared for the heat. Please bring plenty of water (at least 1-2 quarts for each working shift) and a hat with a wide brim. I also recommend dressing in layers, with a light weight, long sleeved over shirt (to keep the sun off your arms). Please come out, lend a hand, enjoy the scenery, and meet other people involved with the Kranz Hill Farm.

(The work on Saturday will likely include weeding thistles out of a large section of the field, so long pants may be a good idea.)

If you will stay for the picnic consider bringing balls, Frisbees, footballs, or other simple toys. We will offer lemonade and small snacks for the picnic; please plan on bringing your own lunch.

If you have any questions, please call (540-0912). (Now that the season has fully begun, we’re rarely on the Internet.) I hope you will join us.
